However, we travelled during Ramadan, a time of fasting, prayer, and self-reflection observed by Muslims worldwide.
The Flight: Smooth Sailing with Air Canada
The journey began with a direct flight on Air Canada. The ease and comfort of the flight set the tone for the adventure ahead. No layovers, no hassle – just a straightforward journey into the heart of Morocco. Direct flights are important because it save you time by eliminating layovers, simplifying your journey, and reducing travel stress. They also decrease the likelihood of lost luggage by ensuring your bags stay on the same plane throughout the journey.
Tangier: A Melting Pot of Cultures
Our Moroccan odyssey kicked off in Tangier, a city where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. Tangier is a melting pot, where myriad cultures converge. The city’s rich history and bustling medina captivated me from the get-go. Strolling through the labyrinthine alleys, I was enveloped by the scents of spices and the vibrant hues of the local markets. We stayed at a Airbnb and the view was beautiful. It was also a way for us to immerse ourselves in the regular lifestyle.

Day Trip to Chefchaouen: The Blue Pearl
One of the main goal of this trip was to visit Chefchaouen, fondly known as the Blue Pearl. Nestled in the Rif Mountains, this town is a dreamy escape with its blue-washed buildings and serene ambiance. Wandering through its cobblestone streets felt like stepping into a different world, one painted in shades of azure and sky blue. Chefchaouen’s laid-back vibe was the perfect counterpoint to Tangier’s bustling energy.

Culinary Delights: A Feast for the Senses
Moroccan cuisine was a feast for my senses. From savoring succulent tagines to indulging in sweet pastilla, every meal was a celebration of flavors. The use of spices like cumin, saffron, and cinnamon in their dishes creates a symphony of tastes that’s distinctly Moroccan. Street food was a highlight, with stalls offering everything from grilled kebabs to steaming bowls of harira.
Experiencing Ramadan: A Different Pace of Life
Traveling during Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, was a unique experience. It’s a time when Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, reflecting on spirituality and practicing self-discipline. The cities were calmer during the day, with a noticeable shift in energy as the evening approached. The breaking of the fast, known as Iftar, brought families and communities together in a heartwarming display of togetherness.
Casablanca: Where Tradition Meets Modernity
My journey culminated in Casablanca, a city where tradition meets modernity. While it’s more cosmopolitan than Tangier or Chefchaouen, Casablanca still holds onto its cultural roots. The awe-inspiring Hassan II Mosque, standing majestically by the sea, was a highlight. The city’s French colonial legacy blends seamlessly with its Moroccan heritage, creating a dynamic urban tapestry.
Final Thoughts
Traveling through Morocco during Ramadan offered a glimpse into the soul of the country. The serene days and lively nights, the blend of solemnity and celebration, and the warmth of the people made this journey unforgettable. Morocco, with its rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture, left an indelible mark on my traveler’s heart. I know that we will be back since a week is not enough to travel and discover this beautiful country. If you’re considering a trip to this mesmerizing country, I say, go for it ( in addition, it is good to know now that there are now direct flight from North America to Marrakesh as well!) – it’s an experience you won’t regret!
